Lighthouses
The Atlantic coast is so dangerous with currents and winds,that
many lighthouses were built to help guide ships through the treacherous
water. There are many lighthouses in New Jersey.
Here you can read about two of the most famous.
The Cape May Lighthouse in Southern New Jersey
The Cape May lighthouse is guarding the entrance to the Delaware
Bay. The first one was built in 1820, the second in 1847 and the
present on in 1859. The third lighthouse in 140 years old. Sandy
Hook lighthouse is older.
Cape May lighthouse is still in operation with its 36 inch
hyper-radial lens. Visitors can climb the 199 spiral steps for
a great view of the Atlantic coast!

The Sandy Hook Lighthouse in New Jersey
Sandy Hook lighthouse overlooks the New York Bay. It was the
fifth lighthouse in colonial America. It is the oldest operating
lighthouse in the nation. It has been in operation since June
11, 1764 and will soon be 235 years old.
The Sandy Hook light is white with eight equal sides. It is
nine stories high, or 103 feet. It is a Historic Landmark.
